Air Abby displaying her awesome "turn and burn" at a local Disc Dog Event.
Welcome to K9 Disc Thrills, my name is David, I live a little bit south of Riverside California with my pack of high drive Herding dogs. I have a few McNab Shepherds and an Australian Shepherd that I got from Aussie Rescue in Ohio. When not working with my personal dogs, I teach Disc Dogging also known as, Dog Frisbee to the masses. I've been an avid Disc Dog Competitor for the better part of 12-years and over the last three years have had over 250 students and their Canine Companions enrolled in my Dog Frisbee classes.
When I'm not teaching, you might find me out competing in a local Skyhoundz, UFO or USDDN events or doing Frisbee Dog Demonstrations for local Animal Shelters Adoption Fairs/Events.
My other passion, which consumes a huge chunk of my time, is spent networking homeless dogs with the local (and not so local) Shelters and Rescues thru my own rescue: Top Gun Rescues. We Specialize in rehoming McNabs and Rottweillers.
So without further ado let me introduce my personal dogs starting off with Sundance, this handsome fellow is all McNab and my main Agility dog who is a natural at this sport. This guy's not only "super-fast" but can change direction on a dime and give you 9-cents change! When he's not ripping around the course, he's looking for sheep to herd, which he's quite good at also.
The Amazing "Air Abby"
After a long and heartfelt search looking at over 200 different dogs in various Rescues, I came across this little girl in an Australian Shepherd Rescue in Cincinatti, Ohio. My friend, Stephanie Meyers was kind enough to go "check her out" and see what kind of Disc Dog drive she had, her report was favorable. Abby only had mild interest in the disc but her strong ball drive kept my interest high in her. Feeling a strong attraction for this little Aussie, I decided to follow those feelings and had her transported out to California. Her first day here was a busy one, she had to meet the gang, go play in the corral with everyone and then made a quick trip over to Julia's where she displayed her ability to catch a Frisbee over 30 times before finally taking a break! So, cards are on the table, now it's up to me to teach her how to compete! Will keep you posted! Check out the link below to see her progress!
AIR ABBY 6-week UPDATE!!!
After having her for almost six weeks, we entered Abby in her very first competition, not just a local event, but a Shyhoundz "Regional" (lots of teams from up and down the California Coast, and Arizona) there were a total of 42 teams, Abby and I finished 16th in the Open Freestyle Class! Here's the video!
As you can tell, we're both still learning about one another. This was a very encouraging start and it will only get better from here! I promise to keep you updated!
Keeping my promise, this is a little more than one year later: August 2012 in Littleton, Colorado. This was a UFO Major Event with over 50 teams competing in Freestyle. Air Abby and I placed 5th Open Freestyle and 7th Overall Open!
My Frisbee Demonstration Specialist
After a 2007 Skyhoundz Regional where Maverick placed “First Overall” in the Time Trial Expert Class Competition, winning the 2007 USDDN Open Freestyle Class at the Wags for Wishes Competition. After almost a year off from Competition, Maverick is back! He decided he didn't want to be just my valuable assistant in my Disc Dog training classes, but a top competitior. In his first competition of 2009 Maverick and I finished third Open, barely missing second by .4 points! Our next event was in Cypress and this time we did finish in second! As of the 2010 season Maverick has retires from Disc Dog Competition, so I will be busy helping out my students who show up for competitons and not taking our own too seriously, having fun is number one! Maverick hasn't given up on activites outside of the competion ring and last July, the Orange County Register showed up to do an article on the Frisbee Fun for Fido class, Maverick was featured in a photo spread that covered over half a page! But, Maverick’s biggest love? He absolutely shines when performing for an audience of kids. Here's a video from our performance. A big word of thanks goes out to the Fifthians for recording this!
My Agility Specialist
And then there's Maverick, my 6-year old McNab (did I hear you say "McNab?" Never heard of them? Look under the McNab Shepherd the Real Story. Maverick has had his picture in the Orange County Register numerous times and stole the show in a Time-Warner "On-Demand" TV special featuring our Disc Dog Class.
And now for our new little Nabbie-Girl, introducing
Sizzle, a full McNab Shepherd born on July 7th, 2012, will be learning all about the Frisbee (of which she already has lots of interest in). She came to me from my friend Gary Williams (www.cowboydogtrainer.com) shares the same grandparents as Sundance. We will be keeping you updated on this little girl, but hope to have her ready to compete during the 2013 season!
Here's a short Video of her very first Disc Dog Demo, we performed at the Long Beach Pet Expo. It was also her first time in front of a crowd, no too bad for a 6-month old Puppy! Can't wait until we really get down to some serious training! She is gonna sizzle!!!
and now, at all of 7-months old, here is Sizzle's 1st EVER Freestyle Competition!
Quote for the day
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion. -author unknown
Disc Dog Empire,
